While the narrative of the Exodus towards the Promised Land has mostly ground to a halt by the book of Numbers, the Torah’s legislation around priests, purity, and promiscuity continues to fascinate. In this week’s Torah portion, we find a procedure to test a wife’s fidelity, vows of devoted consecration, and a special blessing for priests to offer the people. They are windows into the Jewish past, even if they challenge present values.
