June is Pride month, and we will be comparing two movies that reflect that community in the 70s and 80s.

Milk (2008) is a biographical film based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, who was the nation’s first openly gay man to be elected to notable public office in California (in 1977), as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Directed by Gus Van Sant, the film stars Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and Victor Garber.

Milk is available with subscription on HBO (Max) or to rent on Amazon ($2.04).

It is also available from the following libraries on DVD or BluRay:  Arlington Heights, Deerfield, Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park, Indian Trails, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, Palatine, and Vernon Area Public libraries.

The second movie is The Normal Heart (2014), another biographical film which depicts the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City. Writer/activist Ned Weeks, the founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group, and his friends join forces to expose the truth about the emerging AIDs crisis to both the government and the gay community. Directed by Ryan Murphy and starring Mark Ruffalo, and a slew of wonderful actors.

The Normal Heart is available from (HBO) MAX with subscription, or to rent for $3.79 from Amazon, iTunes, and YouTube.

Or you can find it on DVD or BluRay at the Des Plaines, Evanston, Highland Park, Indian Trails, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect Northbrook, or Palatine libraries
