Israel was founded by mostly secular Jews – they were tired of waiting for a messiah, so they built a new Jewish state with their own sweat and blood. They envisioned a Jewish and democratic state where religion would be a private matter and Jewishness would be experienced in history, language, culture and values. As Israel prepares for a momentous national election, and we prepare for an IISHJ tour of “Secular Israel” in October/November 2019, what remains of those founders’ visions?
