Theodicy, or the problem of why bad things happen to good people, has been a philosophical problem for religion for many centuries. The Book of Job is just one attempt to solve the conundrum of a good God and an indifferent universe. Naïve Humanist faith in innate human goodness has also foundered on the rocks of reality. Why does evil persist, and what can we do about it?
